The Black Box Society by Frank Pasquale

Read this book! Having written on this subject matter for years myself, I have rather strong opinions on the matter. I’ve said for years that the US Government would use the full power of available technology for mass surveillance, regardless of the law of the land. And here, the Law Professor Frank Pasquale meticulously documents case after case not only the government’s use of extra judicial mass surveillance of US citizens, but the extensive collusion between big government and major US corporations. In this case the data is already available, we don’t even have to wait 20 years to hear about what they were up to in the past.

I don’t agree with Pasquale’s ideas for how to fix the problem. I think it’s all too far gone for policy changes to fix the growing multi-billion dollar cyber-industrial complex’s incestial relationship with big government. But otherwise, this book brilliantly illustrates the manifestation of the police state. This is a must read for anyone involved on either side of cybercrime, and especially anyone that that has any illusion that passive privacy is possible in the US. It’s official, if you aren’t tech-savvy, very rich, or both, then you are a product for sale in the total information state, and a potential victim of the police state. Highly recommended reading.
